Opening August 24 at Endicott College, Heroes & Sheroes will feature screen prints by Corita Kent (1918-1986), the religious sister remembered for her artwork. At Manship Artists Residency, Hockney Reproduction(s) will run September 11 – October 18, with David Hockney posters, memorabilia and special events on the schedule. At Cape Ann Museum, Avery, Gottlieb. And Rothko: By the Sea is getting rave reviews from people on Pleasant Street, who stop by the COSMOS Gallery after seeing the show. And often acquire a rare gallery catalogue about the three artists; one even purchased by a Mark Rothko family member visiting from New York.

With the homegrown talent, Jeff Weaver: A Solo Exhibition soon opens at North Shore Arts Association in Gloucester. Ruth Mordecai’s Blessings is now aglow at COSMOS Gallery, through August 30. For classical music fans, Manchester Summer Chamber Music presents the Treblemakers, at The Barn, Castle Hill Ipswich, August 8.

SEEKING SANITY

Opening Reception: Thursday, August 6, 5-7pm
Cape Ann artist Katalene (Kat) Masella has been named the 2026 Distinguished Artist/Teacher for Goetemann Artist Residency. With the residency the artist will produce an exhibition, artist talk, and an immersive workshop during the August residency on Rocky Neck.
     A lifelong student of painting, Masella earned a Certificate in Painting from the Art Students League of New York and a Graduate Certificate in Visual Arts from Harvard University. Whether working in oil or mixed media, her paintings combine the physical energy of Expressionism, the vibrant palette of Fauvism, and subtle references to the Dutch vanitas tradition.
     Among Masella's most influential mentors was New York artist Frank O'Cain, a protégé of Vaclav Vytlacil, whose teaching lineage includes artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, Willem de Kooning, and Cy Twombly. That mentorship encouraged Masella to develop the bold, expressive visual language that distinguishes her work today. Gallery RAG
 

INTERTIDAL | Diane Charyk Norris

Gladstone, Manchester-by-the-Sea
Through September 19
The Gladstone exhibition is a collection of monotypes and ink drawings by Diane Charyk Norris, inspired by her close observation of the ephemeral patterns in the rocky intertidal zones, and in the shorelines of Ireland, St. John (USVI), Maine, Cape Cod, and Halibut Point. With long walks along these coasts, she observes and captures the ever-changing energy of the sea.
       Watercolor monotype is a painterly printmaking technique that combines the fluid, expressive qualities of watercolor with the precision of layered plate printing; every monotype is a unique, one-of-a-kind work of art. Diane earned degrees in both Painting and Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania.. Intertidal

JEFF WEAVER: A SOLO EXHIBITION

North Shore Arts Association, Gloucester
August 6 – August 30
Reception: August 7, 6–8 pm
One of the most critically acclaimed painters in the region, Jeff Weaver will have a solo show at the North Shore Arts Association. Born and raised in Massachusetts, he attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and moved to Gloucester in 1972, where he sketched and painted the waterfront daily. Weaver supported himself through waterfront jobs, boat portrait commissions, and more than 30 murals throughout the city, some still extant. Since returning to fine art in the 1990s, he has focused on depicting Gloucester and now operates a studio/gallery on the waterfront. BLESSINGS Ruth Mordecai | Collages & Paintings reflects Mordecai’s lifelong exploration of spirituality, symbolism, and the human search for peace. Known for her powerful abstract collages, paintings, and expressive visual language, Mordecai has spent decades addressing universal themes of identity, community, and the sacred. In Blessings, she draws on Jewish symbols and traditions in a deeply personal response to the recent rise in antisemitism, creating work that offers reflection, resilience, and hope.  BLESSINGS
     Mordecai attended Bennington College, Boston University School of Fine and Applied Arts (BUSFAA) and has taught at the BUSFAA, the deCordova Museum School, and the Harvard University Department of Ceramics. Her artwork is in major public and private collections including the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Israel Museum, the Cape Ann Museum, the Rose Art Museum, and the Wiggin Prints and Drawings Collection of the Boston Public Library

Marblehead Arts Association will populate the Hooper Mansion galleries with Solo Exhibits by these Juried Artists - Lucia Balinbin, Annette Sykes, Jessica Murdock, Christen Mailler, and Richard Honan, as well as “The Spirit of ‘76” themed Artist Members exhibit.
     Balinbin uses acrylics, collage and graphite in “Unbound Abstractions”. Sykes' artwork tells stories of “Antique Hunting with Bob”. In “Expression of Gravity”, Murdock explores the human form. Mailler deconstructs water, light and land in “Shorelines”, while Honan creates intricate “Driftwood Art”. “The Spirit of ‘76” is a special exhibit celebrating this country’s 250th anniversary and channels the 1876 classic painting by Archibald Willard. Marblehead Arts

MAA is producing their first Marblehead Art Crawl & Open Studios, with over 25 Marblehead art studios opening their doors to the public. To enjoy the scenic, summer stroll, download the map one week prior to the event. And then participate in the self-guided tour around town, visiting studios, meeting the artists and learning more about their intricate crafts.

QUARRY DANCE 2026

Windhover Performing Arts Center & Lanesville private quarry

Times include shuttle service to and from Windhover
Quarry Dance is Windhover’s signature summer project, the vision of Windhover’s founder, the late Ina Hahn, with the art of modern dance performed in the pristine landscapes of the Cape Ann quarries.The natural amphitheaters of these quarries opens up a world where art and nature can commingle.
     This year’s Quarry Dance will be performed by New York City-based Alison Cook Beatty Dance Company at a private quarry in Lanesville. A shuttle will transport guests from the Windhover parking lot to the performance and back again. No parking is available at the performnce site. Shuttle service from Windhover runs from 1:30-1:50pm on Friday and Sunday and 10:30-10:50am on Saturday. Quarry Dance admission (including shuttle service) is FREE. No advance RSVP required. This special double bill performance of New York City-based dance artists celebrates the breadth of ways in which legacy informs contemporary dance. Founded in 2012, Alison Cook Beatty Dance is a classically-based modern dance company exploring the universal human condition through movement grounded in American modern dance.
     Nattie Trogdon and Hollis Bartlett are performers, choreographers, educators, and creative partners whose collaborative work spans dance, film, and research-based practices that challenge conventional ideas of performance and personhood. Their work has been presented at leading New York venues and festivals, including LMCC’s River to River Festival, Gibney, Movement Research at Judson Church, and the 92nd Street Y. Tickets

Garrison Keillor created “A Prairie Home Companion” for forty years, with fiction and comedy invented for a town called Lake Wobegon where all the children are above average—even though he himself grew up evangelical in a small separatist flock where all the children expected the imminent end of the world.

Stan Strickland is an American singer, saxophonist, and flutist. For this performance, Strickland and his quartet will play The American Songbook Re-Visited. Joined by Jorge Perez-Abella on drums, Jesse Williams on bass, and Kevin Barry on guitar, Strickland (also known as Rajahn) will perform on woodwinds, voice, and percussion in a vibrant program that reimagines beloved Broadway classics from the Great American Songbook alongside songs by contemporary masters such as Stevie Wonder and Bob Dylan, with a dose of blues woven into the mix.
     Strickland has performed extensively throughout the US, Europe, the Caribbean, and New Zealand. In addition to numerous radio and television appearances, he has performed in clubs and concert halls including Jordan and Symphony Halls in Boston, Carnegie Recital Hall and Town Hall in New York City, and at the Kennedy Center in Washington. THE FORSTER FLAG

Manchester, The Revolution, and The War at Sea

Through September 19
The oldest known American flag, with 13 stripes for the 13 colonies, is linked to the Manchester militia in 1775. The flag traces back to Samuel Forster, Manchester merchant and minuteman. On April 19, 1775, Forster and other men from Manchester, with the 6th Essex County Regiment, marched toward Lexington to engage the British.
     Honoring America 250, the Manchester-by-the-Sea Museum commissioned a new replica of Forster Flag to more accurately represent the original’s unique construction.  This includes its creation from British red ensign elements and the ultimate patchwork of red fabric replacing the original canton, with the stripes of liberty overlaid.  Museum trustee Matthew Genta served as lead researcher, and artisan Jules Means led the sewing group.  The project, financially supported by the Society of Colonial Wars in Massachusetts and Cape Ann Chapter, NSDAR, was based in large part on scholarship published in Doyle New York’s 2014 The Forster Flag.  The exhibition includes a short documentary about the flag's recreation and other works of art inspired by the historic banner. Local historian Judy Anderson will contribute a segment on silver made in Marblehead during the colonial period, offering a rare opportunity to connect global trends with local heritage.       Amanda Stevenson, danced with the Paul Taylor 2 Dance Company from 2013-2019, performing Taylor classics and was part of the company’s reconstruction of early Taylor works, which were performed at Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, as well as the National Museum of Dance in Saratoga Springs, NY.

July 24, 2026, Opening reception for INTERTIDAL | Diane Charyk Norris at Gladstone, Manchester-by-the-Sea. The Gladstone exhibition is a collection of monotypes and ink drawings by Diane Charyk Norris, inspired by her close observation of the ephemeral patterns in the rocky intertidal zones, in the shorelines of Ireland, St. John (USVI), Maine, Cape Cod, and Halibut Point.
