ASTRID REISCHWITZ | TAPESTRY OF MEMORY

Jane Deering Gallery, Gloucester
August 21 – September 20
Opening Reception: Saturday, August 22, 3-5pm

The exhibition Tapestry of Memory features award-winning photographer Astrid Reischwitz, and photos that preserve a fading way of life in the artist’s childhood home in Northern Germany. Most images recall the life and experiences of village women. From the artist — “These works pay homage to the kitchen traditions that have shaped my family’s story across generations. The compositions offer a visual journey through the tastes and textures of traditions inspired by Dutch still-life paintings and the family kitchen table.”  Astrid Reischwitz has exhibited at national and international museums and galleries and received multiple awards. Heftler Gallery, Manninen Center for the Arts at Endicott College
August 24 – November 20
Monday – Friday, 10am – 4pm

The exhibition, Heroes & Sheroes, is a powerful series of prints created by Corita Kent at a pivotal moment in her career. Produced between 1968 and 1969, following her departure from Immaculate Heart College and the Immaculate Heart of Mary order, the works reflect a shift toward more direct engagement with the social and political issues of the time. Drawing from mass media imagery and bold graphic language, Corita’s work addresses civil rights, nuclear disarmament, and political unrest. The series honors influential figures such as Martin Luther King Jr., Coretta Scott King, and Robert F. Kennedy, capturing the urgency and spirit of a transformative era.
Included during the exhibition will be a related lecture series and programming. The Center for Belonging will present Ten Rules for Students and Teachers, further highlighting Corita Kent’s enduring influence on art, education, and creative practice. Corita Kent

LANDINGS 3 VISIONS
Tom Glover, Vanessa Michalak & Jan Roy

COSMOS Gallery, Gloucester
September 4 – October 11
Opening Reception: Friday, September 4, 5-7pm
Artists Talk: Friday, September 11, 5pm

From the Renaissance through Impressionism and abstraction, artists have interpreted the landscape. In contemporary painting, the landscape may remain recognizable—or become only the point of departure. LANDINGS 3 VISIONS brings together three accomplished New England artists whose paintings explore the territory between observation and interpretation. Land, sea, forests, rocks, harbors, boats, and the built environment provide subjects, but the artists’ individual ways of seeing—and painting—transform them.
Tom Glover has spent much of his adult life painting along the New Hampshire and Maine seacoast. Harbors, estuaries, docks, rocks, boats, water, and changing coastal light are the vocabulary he knows intimately. Vanessa Michalak, a Maine native and Gloucester-based artist, approaches the visible world with exuberant color and expressive mark-making. Jan Roy pushes the transformation of place still further. Beginning her artistic career as a silk-screen artist before turning primarily to oil painting, Roy brings a strong sense of graphic structure to landscapes, harbors, architecture, and other observed environments. LANDINGS

SCHOOL OF ROCK – THE MUSICAL

The Firehouse Center for the Arts, Newburyport
August 21 – September 6

A legendary musical, because - Rock got no reason, rock got no rhyme… You better get me to school on time!  Soon in Newburyport, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s School of Rock is a two-hour, two-act show (plus intermission), based on the 2003 hit movie.
The story follows Dewey Finn, a failed, wannabe rock star who decides to earn an extra bit of cash by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. There he turns a class of straight–A pupils into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band. But can he get them to the Battle of the Bands without their parents and the school’s headmistress finding out?
Lloyd Webber produced the stage musical on Broadway and in the West End, penning 14 new numbers for the show, alongside the original songs from the movie. The Broadway production garnered four Tony nominations, and the West End production won the Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Music, awarded to the three children’s bands who played each night. The School of Rock is a loving testimony to the transformative power of music! REESE FULMER & THE CARRIAGE HOUSE BAND

Windhover Outdoor Stage
August 23, 5pm

Born and raised in Gloucester before cutting his teeth as the manager of the iconic Saratoga Springs listening room Caffe Lena, Reese Fulmer was named the 2023 and 2024 Americana Artist of the Year at the Thomas Edison Music Awards.  Reese and his band have become one of the fastest-rising groups in upstate NY.  With a rotating cast of talented players, a broad and dynamic body of work, their shows are always fresh, full of joy, and hard to describe. Think Wilco with hints of Prine and Zappa: “smart, emotionally tuned arrangements and a stage presence that balanced earnestness with unpredictability.
Fresh off a sold-out performance at Old Sloop Coffeehouse in November, they return to Cape Ann for the first time with the entire ensemble. Fulmer has “ a poet’s sensibility rich with great storytelling and a healthy dose of irony.” (Viv Nesbitt, Art of the Song). Reese Fulmer

TONY

The Screening Room, Newburyport
See Showtimes

Before Anthony Bourdain became the celebrated chef, bestselling author, and acclaimed television host, he was Tony – an aimless, rebellious 19-year-old searching for direction after losing out on a writing fellowship. When he lands in Provincetown, hoping to chase down a pretty girl, he unexpectedly finds himself inside a restaurant kitchen. Far from the fully realized version of the man we know from his culinary adventures, the young Tony in the film is an angry punk with the confidence of a Michelin-starred chef but the instincts and skills of a toddler holding a knife. But what happens in Provincetown becomes a life-defining experience that shapes the course of his future. Portrayed with warmth and intensity by actor Dominic Sessa, young Tony is a character anyone can connect with, and director Matt Johnson’s film allows us to luxuriate in the people and places the beloved writer cherished best. ECOC Lecture
SAVING BIRDS TO SAVE THE PLANET

Presentation by Author & Researcher Scott Weidensaul
Morse Auditorium, Peabody Essex Museum
September 4, 7:45 – 9pm

Surprisingly, from gnatcatchers and waterfowl to select groups of forest songbirds, some bird populations are soaring. In this talk based on his newest book The Return of the Oystercatcher: Saving Birds to Save the Planet, Scott Weidensaul will recount successful initiatives in some of the most unlikely places: a tiny island in the middle of the Pacific, the vast boreal forest that spans Canada, a hereditary estate in England, and a watery wilderness at the edge of a Ukrainian war zone.
A book signing for The Return of the Oystercatcher (April 2026) and Boreal Wilderland (August 2026) follows the lecture. He is the author of nearly 30 books on natural history, including the Pulitzer Prize finalist Living on the Wind and his New York Times bestseller A World on the Wing. Weidensaul is a Fellow of the American Ornithological Society and an active field researcher.
This event is co-hosted by the Essex County Ornithological Club and made possible by a gift from Tim and Joanie Ingraham in memory of PEM Trustee Emeritus Dorothy (Dotty) Addams Brown. Saving Birds
