Let's get in the mood for PEM's second major exhibition of the year, featuring an artist who left an extraordinary imprint on the modern visual zeitgeist:

ISAMU NOGUCHI: “I AM NOT A DESIGNER” | PEABODY ESSEX MUSEUM
An artist of versatility, Isamu Noguchi (1904 – 1988) was an innovator across diverse genres, from furniture and lighting, to set designs and plazas. His collaborators were also impressive: Martha Graham, R. Buckminster Fuller, Constantin Brâncuși. Noguchi once said, “Everything is sculpture. CAPE ANN ART
Among the many artists attracted to Cape Ann, Barbara Swan was a summer artist who became integrated with the scene, painting all genres of subject matter; her work now widely held by individuals and institutions. Exhibition at Alpha Gallery, Boston, through October 31. ISAMU NOGUCHI: “I AM NOT A DESIGNER”

Peabody Essex Museum

A major retrospective, the exhibition offers a new perspective on the design work of Isamu Noguchi (1904–1988), one of the 20th century’s most critically acclaimed and genre-blurring artists. His design legacy encompasses sculpture, lighting, furniture, ceramics and designs for public spaces such as gardens, playgrounds and plazas.
     Organized by the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Isamu Noguchi: "I am not a designer" shines a light on the artist’s limitless creativity and social consciousness. Many of his designs remain popular, such as the celebrated coffee table and Akari light sculptures seen in stores today. As Noguchi once said, “Everything is sculpture. Any material, any idea without hindrance born into space, I consider sculpture.” The exhibition also includes work Noguchi did with renowned creative professionals, Martha Graham, R. Bee Vision presents a vibrant selection of prints from Helen Popinchalk’s Hot House series, combining screen printing, gelatin printing, drawing, and collage. Inspired by the way bees and pollinators perceive the world, the artwork explores color, light, and bioluminescence through layered, luminous compositions. Drawing from her experience as a third-generation beekeeper, Popinchalk connects her artistic practice to the ecology of pollinators, revealing the hidden ultraviolet patterns that guide bees through the natural world. The 10th year of Cape Ann Plein Air will soon produce the legendary week when artists & easels materialize across the vistas of Cape Ann. This year 36 juried artists have been selected from among the country’s best, to create original paintings of Cape Ann scenery which will be on display and available for purchase at the Friday Gala & Sale. This year Gloucester’s own Jeff Weaver will serve as the judge, with $20,000 in prize money awarded. Many additional events are scheduled for this now traditional and rich week of plein air painting on Cape Ann. CAPA

BARBARA SWAN: CAPE ANN

Alpha Gallery, Boston

Alpha Gallery is pleased to present Barbara Swan: Cape Ann, continuing through October 31. While Barbara Swan (1922-2003) trained at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, much of her artistic development happened on Cape Ann. Both parents were born and raised in Rockport, and in the early 1950s they built a rustic "camp" on ancestral property where the family could summer. Eventually, a small studio was added and became Swan's laboratory for exploring still lifes, portraits and the surrounding landscape. 
     On Cape Ann, Swan was part of a close circle of artist friends, including Ralph Coburn and Bernard Chaet.  Family and friends would often pose in the studio while a still life set-up of bottles and other objects occupied another corner. The local quarries also fascinated Swan. Often, still life and landscape converged, with water-filled glasses revealing inverted views of land and water beyond.
     Swan’s body of work eventually earned a Lifetime Achievement Award from Wellesley College, as well as retrospective exhibitions at the Danforth Museum of Art, the Museum of Art, University of New Hampshire at Durham, and the Boston Public Library. Swan’s work is represented in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Art Institute of Chicago, Harvard Art Museums, the Cape Ann Museum, among many others. Alpha Gallery
 

SUNDAY AT THE NUT HOUSE

Reception + Gallery Talk: Sunday, September 27, 3-5PM
Sunday at the Nut House celebrates a brief period in the development of three artists who came together with the renowned artist Maurice Sendak, on Sundays in Ridgefield, Connecticut, 2004-2007, to draw from the model. The group formed  because Sendak needed a break from long hours in his studio on such projects as the illustrations and sets for the opera Brundibar. He gave neighbor Jonathan Weinberg the task of forming the drawing group. The sessions took place in “the Nut House” because squirrels frequently dropped acorns on its roof; no commentary on owner’s mental capacity. The paintings, drawings, and posters in the exhibition provide a sense not only of what the work of the drawing sessions was like, but also an introduction to the art the four artists made in the years before, during, and after the Nut House days. AVERY, GOTTLIEB & ROTHKO: BY THE SEA

Cape Ann Museum, Downtown Campus Gloucester

Three pivotal 20th century American artists—Milton Avery (1885–1965), Adolph Gottlieb (1903–1974), and Mark Rothko (1903-1970)—once shared summers in Gloucester, Massachusetts, from the 1920s to the mid-1940s, with lasting impact on their work. The exhibit is a collaboration between Cape Ann Museum and The Phillips Collection (Washington, D.C.), with the organizations also working in close collaboration with all three artists’ estates. This unprecedented exhibit, featuring 82 works from the 1920s to the 1960s, reveals the deep connections between these artists, and their roles as both mentors and peers. FLYING HORSE OUTDOOR SCULPTURE EXHIBIT

The 17th annual Flying Horse Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit features more than 70 works of art displayed on the 100-acre campus of Pingree School in South Hamilton. Sculptors from all over the Northeast are represented in the largest outdoor display in the region with work in a wide range of genres, materials, styles, and sizes.  LANDINGS 3 VISIONS brings together three accomplished New England artists whose paintings explore the territory between observation and interpretation. Land, sea, forests, rocks, harbors, boats, and the built environment provide subjects, but the artists’ individual ways of seeing—and painting—transform them.
    Tom Glover has spent much of his adult life painting New England.  Harbors, estuaries, docks, rocks, boats, water, and changing coastal light are the vocabulary he knows intimately. Vanessa Michalak, a Maine native and Gloucester-based artist, paints with exuberant color and expressive mark-making. Jan Roy brings a strong sense of graphic structure to landscapes, harbors, architecture, and other observed environments. LANDINGS

DOGTOWN TREASURES

An enchanting book, it came into existence after local poet K Prevallet, when walking along a Dogtown path, noticed weathered tiles scattered about the terrain, some attributed to Shep Abbott. She was to learn that the tiles were once “Treasures” used in a youth scavenger hunt that Abbott developed for his Artspace program in 1999. This discovery led to the finding of more than 50 treasure tiles safely stored, which were then unpacked for an exhibition. And now the treasure tiles are the images in Shep’s very special, beautifully illustrated book, which contains many clues to the mysterious lore and history of Dogtown. The book will be a collector’s item someday, just as the original tiles are today. COSMOS Events

Dueling Pianos is back. With two grand pianos center stage and a team of outrageously talented pianists expected to know every song ever written. Because - Dueling Pianos is a massive "to the top of your lungs" sing-along with all your friends at the event. Each show is different because it's all request. The dueling piano audience is used for the dueling aspect of the show. Audience members are pitted one-side-against-the-other. Examples of rivalries include country vs. rock, men against women, etc.

Violinist Scott Moore returns to the Annisquam Village Church for an afternoon of solo Bach. “The two works on this program are both epic and extraordinary," Moore writes.  Bach's Six Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin were published in 1720 and described by  Johannes Brahms as possessing “a whole world of the deepest thoughts and most powerful feelings”. Next played will be the C major Sonata No. 3 described as even more monumental with the longest fugue Bach ever composed for any instrument, a massive structure woven of luminous three- and four-part counterpoint. ANA POPOVIC – DANCE TO THE RHYTHM TOUR

Film programmer Kay Lynch plans to bring bold visions, cult discoveries, and cinematic history to The Bower’s Black Box theater. A veteran of the genre, she is the founder of Salem Horror Fest and is a film lecturer at the Coolidge Corner Theatre, Brookline.
     The Bower series will present an eclectic selection of films chosen for their distinctive visual styles, unconventional characters, provocative themes, and particular relevance to artists and young people exploring the possibilities of visual storytelling. The September theme is Artpunk Joy Rides, starting with cult classic Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! (1965, dir. Explorations of Gloucester Harbor, Whale Song, and the Living Memory of Water

Artist and writer Fiona Brehony, the current Goetemann Artist-in-Residence at Rocky Neck Art Colony, is based in Manchester, Britain, where she collaborates with scientists, composers, historians, and communities. During her residency in Gloucester, Brehony is turning her attention to Gloucester Harbor, exploring the harbor as both a natural ecosystem and a human-made infrastructure. Her work is informed by historian Richard White's concept of the "organic machine" - a landscape that is simultaneously natural and shaped by human activity. This idea offers a way of approaching the harbor not as a backdrop, but as a complex living system in which water, industry, infrastructure, human communities, and other species are continually shaping one another. Experience a closer look at Gloucester’s urban forest during a free guided Tree Walk & Talk, led by International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist and 400 Trees Tree Director, Jack Montgomery.  The walk will explore tree planting locations throughout downtown Gloucester while offering practical lessons in tree care, proper pruning, and the important role trees play in creating healthy, vibrant communities.
     A particular focus of the walk will be structural pruning, a proactive approach to developing strong, healthy trees with a form that is well suited to the challenges of an urban environment.  “City trees have to share their environment with sidewalks, roads, buildings, utility lines and people,” Montgomery said. “With the right care early on, we can help these trees become stronger, healthier and better suited to thrive for generations.” For more information: 400 Trees

2026 CAPE ANN CLASSIC CARS SHOW

Gloucester Meetinghouse Green
Saturday, September 26th, 10am – 2pm
The Green will become a parking lot for some of the most cherished vintage cars in the region. To enter your classic car in the competition, pre-register or request additional information by writing to c.nazarian@gloucestermeetinghouse.org. All cars must arrive by 9am and entrance fee is $20. Attendee's free-will donations go to the ongoing preservation of the Meetinghouse.  Tours of the Meetinghouse interior and treasures will be offered. The best part is you get to judge the cars with handsome trophies awarded to the winners at the conclusion of the show.
      Gloucester’s treasured Meetinghouse, an architectural masterpiece listed on the National Register of Historic Places and located in the center of the Historic District, was erected in 1806 by the First Universalist Society in America.  Classic Car Show

September 9 - 11, 2026. Hockney Reproduction(s) Opens at Manship, with the gallery transformed by an amazing collection and selection of David Hockney's printed exhibition posters, faxes, books, photographs, and more.  The show is an unprecedented and unparalleled homage to the artist, and it is the final show that he approved before his passing in June.  Producer and curator of the show, Bing McGilvray, said knowingly, "David would have loved the show. And loved the place too, an artists residency...."   In the making for a year, the show exceeds expectations and should not be missed.  Through October 18, Friday - Sunday, 1 - 5pm.

Charlie gave an entertaining, totally off the cuff, one hour remembrance of his friendship with David. Charlie was present during the creation of Pearblossom Highway, and is currently working with the Getty Museum on a project built around this piece and to be exhibited during the forthcoming Los Angeles Olympics, Photo credit Bing McGilvray, 2) Book cover for That's the Way I See It, published in 1993, with more than 350 reproductions of Hockney's paintings, graphic designs, and experimental works. 3) Peter Littlefield and Willie Alexander, in the Manship Hockney shop, acquiring gifts for friends.   
September 10, 2026, American Legion, Gloucester. The Henry Tales for Henry Ferrini, as he steps down from Gloucester Writers Center, which he co-founded and built into an integral part of the Cape Ann culture Scene. With JoeAnn Hart, author and event organizer extraordinaire. It was a grand party and joyful evening of tributes.

September 4, 2026, Opening reception, COSMOS Gallery, Gloucester.  The new show Landings 3 Visions, features contemporary landscapes created by three regional artists: Tom Glover, Vanessa Michalak, and Jan Roy. Image of Vanessa at the opening. Show runs through October 11.
