HOCKNEY POSTER ARTISTRY 
The build up to the Hockney exhibition at Manship Artists Residency is now rapidly converging on opening day, September 11.  Registration: Hockney Reproduction(s). The unprecedented assemblage of exhibition posters and other memorabilia is also a design feast, with posters created by the sharpest graphic artists of their time, with clients such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Paris Review. Hammond Castle Museum’s next temporary exhibition will reveal a little-known ancestor of the well documented Hammond family: John Coffee Hays (1817 - 1883). He was the great-uncle and namesake of John Hays Hammond Jr. and carved out his own fierce reputation as a Texas Ranger. Opening Reception Sept 16.

Salem Athenaeum is unveiling an archival reproduction of the 1629 Massachusetts Bay Charter, granted by King Charles I on March 4, 1629, and considered a cornerstone of American History. September 19. Registration

Artists Talk: Friday, September 11, 5pm
From the Renaissance through Impressionism and abstraction, artists have interpreted the landscape. In contemporary painting, the landscape may remain recognizable—or become only the point of departure. LANDINGS 3 VISIONS brings together three accomplished New England artists whose paintings explore the territory between observation and interpretation. Land, sea, forests, rocks, harbors, boats, and the built environment provide subjects, but the artists’ individual ways of seeing—and painting—transform them.
    Tom Glover has spent much of his adult life painting along the New Hampshire and Maine seacoast. Harbors, estuaries, docks, rocks, boats, water, and changing coastal light are the vocabulary he knows intimately. Vanessa Michalak, a Maine native and Gloucester-based artist, approaches the visible world with exuberant color and expressive mark-making. Jan Roy pushes the transformation of place still further. Beginning her artistic career as a silk-screen artist before turning primarily to oil painting, Roy brings a strong sense of graphic structure to landscapes, harbors, architecture, and other observed environments. FLYING HORSE OUTDOOR SCULPTURE EXHIBIT

Artist Reception: Sunday, September 13, 1:30pm
The 17th annual Flying Horse Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit features more than 70 works of art displayed on the 100-acre campus of Pingree School in South Hamilton. Sculptors from all over the Northeast are represented in the
largest outdoor display in the region with work in a wide range of genres, materials, styles, and sizes. Admission is always free and open to the public seven days a week from dawn until dusk. Children and dogs are welcome. The September 13 reception will include a talk by Honorary Chair Rachel TonThat, a multimedia artist and writer based in Zurich, Switzerland and Salem, MA. Feature Articles: Hockney COSMOS
This exhibition is a show about reproduction made up entirely of reproductions by the world- renowned artist David Hockney (1937 - 2026). In addition to over 90 rare posters, the show will include prints, fax collages, many books and catalogues, photos, movies, and a variety of other media. A series of lectures and interactive events is also on the schedule. On September 13, Charlie Scheips, longtime friend of Hockney, will speak at Manship. On September 19, Richard Benefield, former director of the Hockney Foundation, will speak. On September 26, the film "David Hockney. A Bigger Picture" will be screened at Sawyer Free Library.        The exhibition is also about friendship. Curator Bing McGilvray and David Hockney shared a unique and special friendship that spanned over five decades. Bing's accumulated wealth of Hockney material became the foundation for the Manship exhibition. Additional materials have been donated or loaned by collectors as well as by the Hockney Foundation. The artist also became an enthusiastic supporter of the exhibition, sending more items from his L.A. studio.
    Since Hockney knew that most people would only see his work in reproduction, he took great care assuring his imagery would be of the highest graphic quality. The show will please design connoisseurs as well as those who love the inimitable style of Hockney. Hockney Reproduction(s)


AMERICA IN THE MAKING

With this exhibition, the Addison joins museums across the country in marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.  Art serves as a visual record of the American culture and its historical, political, and social transformations The 18th century portraits reflected social hierarchies; the 19th century landscapes captured the sublime nature of the country. The modernized artists took on the complexities of 20th century life, many turning away from the visible world by mid-century, and embracing abstraction and a new spirit of individualism and dissent. This enchanting book came into existence after a local poet discovered forgotten artifacts along the ancient Dogtown Road. K Prevallet was walking along the path when she noticed weathered tiles, scattered about the terrain, some attributed to Shep Abbott. She was to learn that the tiles were once “Treasures” used in a youth scavenger hunt that Abbott developed for his Artspace program  in 1999. This discovery led to the finding of more than 50 treasure tiles safely stored, to be unpacked for an exhibition. And now the basis of a very special, beautifully illustrated book, which contains many clues to the mysterious lore and history of Dogtown. The book will be a collector’s item someday, just as the original tiles are today. COSMOS Events

THE OTHER SIDE IS HERE: A HAPPENING

Witness the transformation of the historic courtyard of Captain Harvey Coffin Mackay into a ship/stage where poetry, sound, visual art, ghosts and seagulls mingle and collaborate. The unfolding is co-created by CoCo Haze of Gallery RAG, K Prevallet of the Underverse, and Loren Doucette of Doucette Studios, along with special guests to be announced. Between 11am – 6pm, artists and soundscape artists will build the site-specific artwork. The Poetry & Sound Event will happen at 7pm, with all participants, including ghosts and special guests. The project is funded by the Harbortown Cultural District and the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

While summering together on Cape Ann in the 1930s, Milton Avery, Adolph Gottlieb, and Mark Rothko spent their days painting luminous seascapes and evenings reading aloud the poetry of T. S. Eliot. From his early masterpiece, The Love Song of J. Alfred.  Prufrock to The Four Quartets, Eliot’s poetry returns time and again to the Gloucester seascapes he encountered near his family’s summer home. Dr. John D. Morgenstern (DPhil, Oxford) is a scholar of twentieth-century literature and the coeditor of The Edinburgh Companion to T. S. Eliot and the Arts (2016), and other works on Eliot. Solo Dances from the Indian Tradition

For the final dance performance this summer at Windhover,  Samāgata {Sanskrit: to come together} will feature three traditional Indian dancers, Sapna Govindan, Soumya Rajaram, and Priya Bangal. In the Indian tradition, music, poetry, dance, painting, sculpture, literature, legend and myth are all inseparably linked in a vast tapestry of art and aesthetics. For a dancer, immersion in her practice involves an awareness of these subtle yet vital connections to reveal ‘rasa’ – the ultimate aesthetic essence of her work. Her audience is then, not merely a spectator, but a co-creator of this shared experience beyond the self, beyond the here and now. Samāgata is a coming together – of the dance and dancer, of the artist and the audience, and of three different dance forms from the Indian tradition – Mohiniyattam, Odissi and Bharatanatyam. The closing program of this year’s Jonathan Bayliss Society annual conference, “Gloucester’s Acropolis: Defining the City Then and Now,” will be a series of short talks exploring the role and influence of Cape Ann Museum in the community life of Gloucester throughout its existence, with a glimpse toward the future as well. Speakers are CAM’s Director Oliver Barker, Chief Curator Martha Oaks, and former Museum volunteer Deanie Hancock French. The Legend of John Coffee Hays

Soon opening at Hammond Castle and with a surprising Western narrative, this temporary exhibition will add another chapter to the Hammond family history: legendary Texas Ranger captain John Coffee Hays was the great-uncle and namesake of John Hays Hammond Jr. The exhibition “Brave-Too-Much”: The Legend of John Coffee Hays is presented in partnership with the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum in Waco, Texas. Through the loan of museum artwork and fascinating stories, this unique exhibition will for the first time introduce New England audiences to the life of John Coffee Hays, who joined the Texas Rangers at just 19 years old and became one of the most respected military leaders of his era. Notable Rangers who served under or alongside him include Samuel Walker, co-inventor of the Colt Walker revolver, the first practical six-shooter in the Old West, and Flacco, a Lipan Apache chief, who gave him the nickname “Bravo-Too-Much” (aka “Brave-Too-Much”) for his boldness in battle. Visitors will explore his role in the Texas Republic, the Mexican-American War, the California Gold Rush, and the founding of early California communities, while also examining the complex history of the American frontier and the many cultures that shaped it. The Salem Athenaeum will celebrate a cornerstone of American history with the unveiling of a newly created four-panel archival reproduction of the 1629 Charter of the Governor and Company of the Massachusetts Bay in New England, commonly known as the Endecott Charter.
     "Few documents connect Salem so directly to the larger story of American democracy," said Jean Marie Procious, Executive Director, Salem Athenaeum. "We are honored to preserve this extraordinary artifact and to share its history with the public as part of Salem 400+. This event invites our community to reflect on how a document granted nearly 400 years ago continues to resonate today." At the unveiling, distinguished historians Charlie Newhall and Emerson "Tad" Baker will explore the document's remarkable journey and enduring legacy
     Granted by King Charles I on March 4, 1629, the charter established the Massachusetts Bay Colony and provided the legal framework for its government. Historians regard it as one of the most important documents in early American political history because it enabled an unprecedented degree of self-government in the English colony. The Salem copy, known as the Endecott Charter, arrived in Naumkeag (present-day Salem) on June 23, 1629, and was presented to Governor John Endecott and remained in Massachusetts before being donated to the Salem Athenaeum by Leverett Saltonstall in 1810.

Author Patricia Hanlon will discuss her book, Swimming to the Top of the Tide: Finding Life Where Land and Water Meet, which follows her exploration through The Great Marsh, extending from Cape Ann to New Hampshire. Hanlon and her husband built their home and raised their children alongside The Great Marsh, but not until the children were grown did she begin to swim the tidal estuary daily. Immersing herself  with all her senses in all seasons, she experienced the vigor where two ecosystems of fresh and salt water mix, merge, and create new life. Registration

Artist and writer Fiona Brehony, the current Goetemann Artist-in-Residence at Rocky Neck Art Colony, is based in Manchester, Britain, where she collaborates with scientists, composers, historians, and communities. During her residency in Gloucester, Brehony is turning her attention to Gloucester Harbor, exploring the harbor as both a natural ecosystem and a human-made infrastructure. Her work is informed by historian Richard White's concept of the "organic machine" - a landscape that is simultaneously natural and shaped by human activity. This idea offers a way of approaching the harbor not as a backdrop, but as a complex living system in which water, industry, infrastructure, human communities, and other species are continually shaping one another. The popular event is part of Hunger Action Month (September) and raises funds to support local hunger-relief programs of The Open Door.  Last year, The Open Door met a 36% increase in requests for food assistance, in addition to 30% increases in both 2023 and in 2024  The fashion show featuring ensembles from Second Glance, Thrift Store, begins at 7pm. For the first time ever, this event will feature a finale with custom, upcycled looks by Massachusetts College of Art and Design alumni using materials from Second Glance. August 25, 2026, Windhover, Rockport, a perfect night for the annual Gala, with Windhover lovers & supporters gathering to mingle and immerse in the beautiful setting, with the mellow sounds of Stan Strickland blending with nature. Many attendees dressed in their summer best, as did these lovely ladies.
Enjoying the Windhover bash, siblings Aaron Fink and Anita Fink. Aaron is a well known artist in the region and Anita owns and operates the Alpha Gallery in Boston. Both children of artist Barbara Swan.
August 27, 2026, Opening at Cove Gallery, Gloucester, for PIECE-BY-PIECE The Art of Assemblage, Where 1 + 1 = 3, with five Rocky Neck members creating amazing constructions from common starting materials. The artists include David Covert, Brian Murphy, Marion Powers, Judy Robinson-Cox, and Beth Williams. Brian Murphy with a wall of boots made with many found pieces, as well as fish and bovine heads. Brian can make artwork out of the most forgotten materials; such is genius.

Now showing at Charles Fine Arts, Gloucester, Into the Garden, Lindy Saunders. The exhibition marks Saunders first solo show and introduces a body of work rooted in the enduring relationship between nature and abstraction. HOCKNEY REPRODUCTIONS(S) installation underway, with Bing McGilvray, Katherine Richmond and others completing the acquisitions, mounting, and other sundry preparations needed to unpack and install the exhibition at Manship Artists Residency. Exhibition runs September 11 - October 18. Registration.
Fortunately, Bing has two assistants, helping transport the many exhibition pieces into the magnificent gallery space, once studio of sculptor Paul Manship.
