She later worked with Keystone Press and freelanced for major international outlets, capturing politicians, artists, athletes, and revolutionaries with disarming candor. A magnetic presence, she revealed iconic figures in unguarded moments. KOREAN ART
Peabody Essex Museum, Salem
On view May 17, 2025
Peabody Essex Museum’s trove of art, artifacts and collectibles represents its lengthy history of exploration and exchange with Asian regions and ports, originating in the era of seafaring vessels in search of trade. PEM’s early era Korean collection was largely built by Edward Sylvester Morse (1838-1925), director of the Peabody Academy of Science (a predecessor organization to PEM). PEM’s connection with Korea was also strengthened by Yu Kil-Chun (1856-1914), the reformist scholar and politician who came to the U.S. as a member of the first Korean delegation. PEM’s Yu Kil-Chun Gallery of Korean Art and Culture brings to life these early pioneers, presented alongside the museum’s renowned Korean textile collection, 19th-century paintings and contemporary works by Nam June Paik (1932–2006) and other Korean and Korean American artists.
